Nassau's most visited historical attraction in Nassau is the Queen's Staircase. The 102 foot staircase consisting of 65 steps was named in honor of Queen's Victoria, commemorating her 65 year reign and her abolishment of slavery in the Bahamas in the early 19th Century.
We visited the stairs as part of a cruise ship excursion in combination with a tour of Fort Charlotte that ended with the walk down these stairs to our bus. Our guide explained to us that between 1793 and 1794 slaves carved these steps out of solid limestone with only axes and hand tools and were built as an escape route in case Fort Fincastle was ever attacked.
So Yeah we got to actually walk down the stairs as if we were fleeing from the fort! As I started the descent, seeing these stairs carved out of the side of a mountain, I realized how incredible a feat this was. Yes the steps are uneven and a little short by US standards but considering how they came about it is nothing short of remarkable. It is a must see and a great photo opportunity.
